Running in Miles vs Kilometres: A Practical Guide to Distance and Pace Conversion

By ConvertStuffNow  ·  6 min read

Running has a measurement problem. Most of the world runs in kilometres. The United States runs in miles. UK runners use both, sometimes on the same run. GPS watches let you pick your unit, but race distances are fixed: a half marathon is 21.1 km regardless of what your watch displays, and the classic 10K doesn't become more manageable just because someone calls it 6.2 miles.

If you run regularly and want to compare training data, understand race distances or figure out what "7 min/mile pace" means in your units, this guide covers what you need to know.

The basic distance conversion

One mile equals 1.60934 kilometres. One kilometre equals 0.62137 miles.

The "5 miles = 8 km" approximation is useful and close enough for casual reference. The actual answer is 8.047 km, so you're about 47 metres off per 5 miles — negligible for training, irrelevant for race planning.

Pace conversion: the one that really matters

Distance is straightforward. Pace is where runners get genuinely confused — because pace conversions aren't just a multiplication. Min/km and min/mile work differently.

To convert min/km to min/mile: multiply your per-km pace by 1.60934.

So a 5:00 min/km pace = 5 × 1.60934 = 8:03 min/mile.

To convert min/mile to min/km: divide your per-mile pace by 1.60934 (or multiply by 0.62137).

So a 9:00 min/mile pace = 9 ÷ 1.60934 = 5:35 min/km.

Note that pace is in minutes and seconds, so you need to handle the seconds correctly. A 5:30 min/km pace is 5.5 minutes (not 5.3). Convert to decimal minutes first, multiply, then convert back.

Example: 5:30 min/km = 5.5 decimal minutes. 5.5 × 1.60934 = 8.85 minutes per mile = 8 minutes 51 seconds per mile.

Treadmill speeds: km/h vs mph

Gym treadmills add another layer of confusion. Some display speed in km/h; others (especially US-manufactured machines) display in mph.

To convert treadmill km/h to your running pace in min/km: divide 60 by the km/h speed. So 10 km/h → 60 ÷ 10 = 6:00 min/km.

Why your GPS watch might show different distances on the same route

If you switch your watch between miles and km, the displayed distance will look different — but you've run the same route. A 5.0-mile run is the same physical distance as an 8.05-km run; the unit label changes, not the effort.

When comparing training data across platforms (Strava, Garmin Connect, Nike Run Club), check which unit each platform is using before drawing conclusions. The raw distance data is the same; it's the display that differs.

The 5K to mile rule of thumb

For runners who want a quick mental reference: multiply any km distance by 0.6 to get a rough mile equivalent, or divide miles by 0.6 (multiply by 1.67) to get kilometres. It's slightly off from the exact 0.621 factor, but it keeps the mental arithmetic manageable.

Or use the "5 miles = 8 km" anchor and scale from there: 10 miles = 16 km, 2.5 miles = 4 km, and so on.

Distance and pace conversions use exact metric-to-Imperial conversion factors. Race distances are as defined by World Athletics and event organisers.
